Cambridge Enters Critical Drought Status as State Tightens Water Rules

TOWN -- Cambridge Recreation's Gold Star Pool has opened for the 2026 season, offering free public swim to Cambridge residents across its two ADA-compliant pools, according to the department, a division of the city's Department of Human Service Programs. The department is also running its "Fun Under the Sun" initiative, part of the Cambridge Summer Food Program, which brings youth sports activity -- including soccer, flag football and deck hockey -- to Cambridge kids alongside free lunch, and is hosting its Danehy Park Summer Concert Series and "Screen on the Green" family movie nights through the summer. Cambridge Recreation also announced its Special Olympics delegation, referred to on the department's site as the "Cambridge Warriors," is heading to Minneapolis for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- Cambridge Youth Hockey, home of the Falcons and based at Simoni Rink, announced that Massachusetts now requires youth hockey players to wear neck guards in both games and practices starting Aug. 1. The club has also opened placement registration for the 2026-2027 season. Separately, Cambridge Youth Soccer has opened registration for its next season, which the club says starts Sept. 12.
