Cambridge Approves Alcohol-To-Go Sales, Extended Bar Hours For Local Businesses

CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge's License Commission this week authorized seasonal alcohol-to-go sales and extended bar hours for local businesses, even as residents brace for a 10-day Red Line shutdown at every Cambridge station and a jump to Critical Drought status across the region.

Acting on a recommendation from the City Manager's Office, the License Commission approved seasonal sale of alcohol-to-go for permitted businesses within designated open-container and public-consumption districts, along with a one-hour extension of alcohol sales for approved bars and restaurants, a move city officials framed as support for local businesses.

The MBTA will suspend Red Line service between Alewife and Park Street for 10 consecutive days, July 21 through 30, with free, accessible shuttle buses making all stops in between. Separately, the Commonwealth elevated Cambridge and the broader Northeast region from Level 2 "Significant Drought" to Level 3 "Critical Drought" status last week.

The City's Community Benefits Advisory Committee issued an advance notice of an upcoming competitive grant round for community-based nonprofits that serve Cambridge residents' critical needs, with details to follow. The city's contractor, Newport Construction, is also set to begin roadway milling and paving on several street sections around the city starting the week of July 20, weather permitting.

Library Director Maria McCauley's July 12 update previewed a run of summer programming, including summer fitness classes, an introductory American Sign Language workshop, and a community banner-sewing project. The Valente Branch is now open Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. through July and August, while the Main Library remains closed on Sundays until September.

Cambridge teens ages 14 to 19 can sign up starting today for Teen Night Live, which returns to the city's youth centers with skill-based workshops and field trips on weekday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. through August 14.
