Cambridge Defers ShotSpotter Vote to August 3 After Charter Rights Halt Debate

City Council · Meeting of July 23, 2026

Cambridge City Council defers ShotSpotter reinstatement vote to August 3 after charter rights halt all policy orders. The council convened a special meeting July 23 to address gun violence following the July 4 murder of city employee Xavier Bautista, hearing from nearly 40 public commenters — the large majority opposing reinstatement — before Acting Police Commissioner Pauline Wells disclosed that in 2025, ShotSpotter covered seven Cambridge shots-fired incidents but triggered alerts on only three, missing all four shootings that resulted in injuries. Newly hired Assistant Director for Violence Prevention Dr.

Kwame Dance pledged a comprehensive violence prevention plan for the fall. Councillors Denise Simmons and Tim Flaherty, who co-filed the reinstatement order, argued that residents of the most affected neighborhoods were never consulted before the technology was removed, while Councillors Sabrina Wheeler and Zeeshan Alzubi cited city data showing ShotSpotter detected none of the 2024 or 2025 injury shootings and that seven of 10 gunshot-related murders committed during ShotSpotter's decade of operation remain unsolved. Alzubi exercised her charter right to defer the ShotSpotter order; Simmons then exercised charter rights on all remaining policy orders, sending every item to the August 3 meeting.
