Cambridge Council Takes No Votes After Marathon Comment
City Council · Meeting of October 5, 2026
Cambridge Council hears nearly 90 speakers on bike lanes, sewage and sex work, takes no votes. Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui presided over a roll call of seven members present, with Vice Mayor Burhan Azeem and Councillor Simmons absent. Speakers split over Policy Order 8, which would pause the Outer Huron Avenue bike lane for up to a year to preserve 44 to 54 parking spaces; cyclist Heather Penskofer warned delay means "leave cyclists completely unprotected next to traffic, moving at 35 miles an hour." On Policy Order 2, resident Deb Olkin asked the council to swap a planned Sherman Street sewage tank for full sewer separation.
The biggest bloc backed Charter Right 2, full decriminalization of sex work, endorsed by groups including Freedom Network USA and Jane Doe Inc., while Safe Exit Initiative's Audra Doody pushed a partial "equality model" instead. No formal council action occurred during the public comment period captured.
