Councillor's newsletter offers election guides, Halloween, library events
Cambridge City Councillor Marc McGovern's weekly newsletter points residents to guides on the nine state ballot questions, Halloween open houses at fire stations, a household hazardous waste collection day Nov. 7, and upcoming library and bookstore author talks.
Cambridge City Councillor Marc McGovern's weekly newsletter, posted Oct. 31, highlights several resources and events for residents.
With nine ballot questions on Tuesday's ballot, McGovern pointed to two guides. Cambridge resident Neheet Trivedi created The Ballot Line, a free online guide explaining each question, presenting arguments for and against, identifying supporters and opponents, and linking to news coverage, with short interviews with organizers on some questions. Students at Fayerweather School, working on a civics project led by humanities teacher Jennifer Kay Goodman, also produced a simplified voter's guide after studying the nine questions.
McGovern also noted the city's Winter Warmth Drive, which helps keep unhoused residents warm this winter, is still short of its fundraising goal and welcomes contributions.
Cambridge fire houses opened their doors Oct. 31 from 4 to 6 p.m. for Halloween, inviting residents to meet firefighters, see trucks and equipment, and get treats donated by Cambridge Brands, along with glow sticks and vouchers while supplies lasted. Fire Headquarters at 491 Broadway was closed for reconstruction and did not participate, and crews elsewhere remained on duty and could leave for emergencies. Cambridge police also handed out candy at the station at 125 Sixth Street and around the community.
The Cambridge Public Library and Harvard Book Store will host author Jacob Weisberg on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. in the Main Library Lecture Hall to discuss his book "Profiles in Cowardice: A Study of Collaboration in the Trump Era," in conversation with Harvard Law Professor Noah Feldman. Registration is required.
The city's last Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day of the year will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 50 Mooney Street, with entry via Fawcett Street. The event is for Cambridge residents only; property managers bringing more than 25 pounds or 25 gallons are asked to email recycle@cambridgema.gov in advance.
Porter Square Books will welcome political strategist and author Maya Rupert on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. at 1815 Massachusetts Ave.
