Cambridge City Council unanimously backs three state pet-housing protection bills

CAMBRIDGE — March 16, 2026 — Cambridge City Council votes unanimously to support three state pet-housing bills. The council at its March 16 meeting adopted a policy order sponsored by Councilor Marc McGovern urging the Massachusetts legislature to pass Senate Bill 1022, House Bill 1559, and House Bill 4835, which would prohibit landlords from discriminating against tenants with pets and establish uniform pet policies in senior housing facilities statewide. Mayor Siddiqui and Councilor E. Denise Simmons were added as co-sponsors before the unanimous vote. During public comment, Kit Lilly, founder of Charles River Alley Cats, said her organization has assisted more than 22,000 cats in Eastern Massachusetts and called restrictive rental policies "heartbreaking" for owners forced to surrender animals. The council also heard a bi-weekly federal update from City Manager Yi-An Huang, who noted a new pattern of ICE detainees being transported out of state and released without assistance, and said the city would explore support options through its equity and resiliency body. A city-led permitting streamlining review is expected to produce recommendations by mid-June 2026.
