Cambridge Planning Board Extends Volpe Project Construction Deadline to September 2025

CAMBRIDGE — April 30, 2024 — Cambridge Planning Board unanimously extends Volpe Kendall Square development's construction start deadline by one year to September 2025. The 6-0 vote on the minor amendment to Case PB368 — a Materimco planned unit development spanning approximately 3 million square feet across eight building sites — marks the second consecutive one-year extension, pushing the original September 2023 commencement date back two years. The board also voted 6-0 to accept certified transcripts from seven meetings as official minutes. A lengthy staff transportation briefing covered the city's 133 properties under Transportation Demand Management requirements, a goal of 100 public EV charging stations, a forthcoming American Rescue Plan Act-funded e-bike subsidy program for low-income residents, and bicycle crash data showing serious incidents fell from more than 50 percent of reported crashes in 2004-2012 to less than 5 percent in 2015-2022. New zoning project planner Teal Dellis, hired from the New York City Department of City Planning, was introduced to the board at the meeting.
