Cambridge Ordinance Committee cancels hearing for lack of quorum
Ordinance Committee · Meeting of August 19, 2026
Cambridge Ordinance Committee cancels hearing after failing to reach a five-member quorum. The panel needed five members because the session was convened as a committee of the whole, but three members were known in advance to be absent and a fourth dropped out that morning from an out-of-state conference. A fifth prospective member, Councilor Azim, was reportedly logging on before texting the chair that he could not move a prior commitment, killing the quorum.
"It's embarrassing that the council can't come together... but we can't muster five people," the chair said, apologizing to residents and staff who had prepared for the hearing. The ordinance under review does not expire until November 17, and the committee said a new hearing will be reposted with 48 hours' public notice and direct email to everyone who had signed up to speak.
