CAMBRIDGE — April 9, 2026 — Cambridge Finance Committee designates social housing, supportive housing, and childcare as top three budget priorities. The committee voted 7-0 Thursday to combine the Cambridge Preschool Program expansion and after-school program expansion into a single childcare priority and advance it alongside a social housing revolving fund and supportive housing expansion as the three areas city staff will formally scope for future budget cycles. Co-Chairs Councilor Patricia Nolan and Councilor Zeeshan Al-Zubi described the vote as the council's first structured, multi-step prioritization exercise, distinct from the FY27 operating budget already in preparation and aimed at informing FY28 and later spending decisions within the city's $992 million operating budget. Deputy City Manager Yi-An Huang said social housing scoping would require a six-to-eight-month stakeholder engagement period before any proposal development, while supportive housing — which includes a potential day center near 240 Albany Street, housing voucher expansion, and an overdose prevention center — may require further narrowing through the housing committee. Two representatives of Somerville Cambridge Elder Services separately requested $350,000 to continue a federally defunded technology access program serving Cambridge residents 60 and older.
