Cambridge Elevated to Critical Drought Status, State Announces
CAMBRIDGE — The Commonwealth has elevated Cambridge and the broader Northeast region to a Level 3 Critical Drought status, up from Level 2 Significant, the city said in a new update, its most serious water designation of the summer.

The city's drought status was elevated to Level 3 Critical last week, up from Level 2 Significant, the City of Cambridge said in a News Flash update, a shift that typically brings tighter guidance on outdoor water use across the region.
Separately, the License Commission has authorized the seasonal sale of alcohol-to-go for permitted businesses within designated open-container and public-consumption districts, along with a one-hour extension of alcohol sales for approved bars and restaurants, acting on recommendations from the City Manager's Office.
The city's mattress and box-spring recycling program also changed Monday: residents who schedule a pickup through UTEC will now pay a portion of the collection and recycling cost, with the city continuing to subsidize the remainder. Elsewhere at City Hall, the Community Benefits Advisory Committee gave advance notice of an upcoming competitive grant round for nonprofits addressing critical resident needs, and contractor Newport Construction began roadway milling and paving work this week as part of citywide road enhancements. The Department of Public Works also has its fifth of 10 planned neighborhood pop-up recycling events set for July 29. Riders should note that MBTA Red Line service between Alewife and Park Street is suspended for shuttle buses beginning July 21 through July 30, part of previously announced work at all Cambridge stations.

Library Director Maria McCauley's July 19 weekly update previewed an ice cream party, an "adult summer camp" series and a program called Seeds of Change, among other offerings across library branches. The Valente Branch is now open Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. through July and August, while the Main Library remains closed Sundays until September.
On the calendar, the library's Summer Reading series brings a live-animal program with Mass Audubon to the O'Neill branch Tuesday at 11 a.m., letting children meet wildlife ambassadors. Wednesday at 6 p.m., the Main Library and Harvard Book Store host political strategist Ben Wikler, former chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, discussing his new book "This Is the Plan: How to End America's Meltdown and Save Democracy" in conversation with Harvard professor Danielle Allen; registration is required.
